Workshops are run from Jane's studio in rural Suffolk near to Cambridge.

Participants will be introduced to many of the techniques from her books
'Smoke Fired Pottery' and 'Naked Clay'
& her new book 'Smoke Firing Contemporary Artists & Approaches'.

SUITABLE FOR : Professional potters & ceramic artists, teachers, hobby potters, students
ACCOMODATION
There is plenty of reasonably priced B&B accommodation nearby in the Hundon / Clare area. A list will be sent on receipt of your booking. Camping is available here (shower & toilet facilities in barn). If you do not have a car, transport will be provided in between the workshop and your accomodation (if in Clare or Hundon) each day.

THE 2010 WORKSHOPS ARE FIRING WORKSHOPS. YOU WILL NEED TO BRING YOUR OWN BISQUE FIRED WORK

WORKSHOP 1
April 24th & 25th (Sat / Sun)
SMOKE FIRING / SAGGAR FIRING
Workshop 1 will include:
Slide presentations & group discussions on techniques, problem solving & aesthetics
SMOKE FIRING
- Smoke resist methods
- Pattern & mark making techniques
- Kiln building & smoke firing with slow & fast firing fuels
SAGGAR FIRING
- Using salts & oxides to achieve flashings of colour
- Black Firing using sawdust & paper.
Please bring 6 - 8 small (teacup size) bisque fired pieces for the saggar firings and up to 10 pieces for the smoke firing (reasonably sized not exceeding 25cm in any direction)) It is suggested you also bring up to 10 'test tiles' (saucer size) which are very useful to make a record of the smoke & saggar effects.
Suitable Clays & Firing Temperature
Use any open bodied clay – LOW BISQUE between 820 - 920 degrees centigrade. Burnishing is advised but not necessary. If you are travelling by aeroplane it is suggested you bring pieces which will fit inside one another and bring plenty of tiles.
Workshop 1 cost is £238 to include tuition, materials, firing, coffee/tea and a vegetarian lunch

SMOKE FIRING / PIT FIRING
Workshop 2 will include:
Slide presentations & group discussions on techniques, problem solving & aesthetics
SMOKE FIRING
- Smoke resist methods
- Pattern & mark making techniques
- Kiln building & smoke firing with slow & fast firing fuels
PIT FIRING
- Pit firing in a dug out ground pit, fired with wood
- Using salts,oxides and organic materials to achieve flashings of colour
Please bring up to 6 pieces for the pit firing (not exceeding 25cm in any direction) and up to 10 pieces for the smoke firing reasonably sized (not exceeding 25cm in any direction) It is suggested you also bring up to 10 'test tiles' (saucer size) which are very useful to make a record of the smoke & pit firing effects.
