Iyengar Yoga is a pure and traditional style of Hatha Yoga as developed by BKS Iyengar of Pune, India. With its main emphasis on detail, precision and alignment, together with its use of appropriate supports (props), Iyengar Yoga tailors the practice in a safe and progressive way to the individual’s ability.
During a class you will be led through a structured sequence of postures which may include standing postures, sitting postures, twists, forward bends, backbends, inverted postures and restorative postures as well as breath control (pranayama).
Practising yoga helps overcome the stresses and strains of modern life. It brings vitality, flexibility, strength, concentration, self-confidence and mental calm, promoting a firm foundation for health and well being.
The teacher Jane Perryman has been teaching Iyengar yoga for 25 years and holds both the Introductory and Junior Intermediate Level 3 certificates. She has attended the institute in Pune to study with BKS Iyengar.
The studio is fully equipped and classes are small (maximum 10), ensuring plenty of individual guidance. We practise on an empty stomach (leave an hour after a light snack) and work in bare feet & loose or stretchy clothing to allow movement.
